DV Survivors Accessing UI

Job loss and domestic violence have been two of the biggest challenges during the pandemic, and UI has served as a vital safety net for jobless workers. But survivors of domestic violence are also workers who lose their jobs or are forced to relocate due to domestic abuse. UI could play a similar lifeline for them.

A framework for ensuring survivors have access to UI is already in place but appears to be underutilized.... more »

Language Justice

Equal access to government programs and systems is critical for ensuring all individuals in the United States are afforded the same treatment under the law. Meaningful access to government programs and systems requires proper access to interpreters and translated materials for Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals. LEP individuals are those who report speaking English less than "very well," as defined by the U.S.... more »

Accessibility of UI Programs

I would recommend that the Office of Disability Employment and Policy include a focus on accessibility with respect to UI systems, especially for individuals with disabilities, who are limited English proficient and who lack access to or ability to handle technology.  This should include ensuring that all notices are in plain language, multilingual and communicated in the individual's preferred method of communication... more »

Where are you posting job ads? Edited

Job ads have been historically marketed to only certain sectors of our society - white, educated and tech-savvy individuals. To increase diversity of job applicants, employers should be required to post their jobs on numerous sites including sites that cater to different ethnicities, languages, etc. If you're looking for diverse job applicants, you'll need to share beyond the average job ad platforms.

Personal anecdote:... more »

Balance Construction Contractor Funnel with Women and Minorities

There are over 808,891 construction workers currently employed in the United States. From that, 87.8% of all construction workers are men. Nationally, only 3.4% of construction trade workers are female, as of 2018, according to U.S. Labor Department statistics. One of the challenges is that this has always been a white male dominated field where you were typically brought into the union by your uncle, brother, or father.... more »

Threshold for Underserved Geographic Communities

Being that there are certain jurisdictional thresholds in place for equal employment opportunity for EO 11246, and VEVRAA, there should be a threshold in place for underserved geographic communities.

When it comes to gender, race and sexuality, diversity has been at the forefront of equity in the workplace for many years. One form of inequality that has been absent is discrimination based on social class or socio-economic... more »

Harassment in the Workplace

Too many times, any sort of harassment that happens in the workplace gets brushed aside. Still to this day, comments towards others gets brushed off with a laugh because too many employees and employers think nothing of the nature of their statements. And, when employees do go to their higher ups, they are told to either grow thicker skin, or that what might have taken place was not important due to the amount of money... more »

Employer hiring for a position should not be able to report to D.O.L a candidate who refuses a job. Some of them out there hiring part time, minimum wage and not providing benefits (which part timers don't get). The cards need to be reshuffled. D.O.L needs to accompany the workers for better pay and benefits. People are having to work 3 jobs to make ends meet living the babies to  raise themselves. These babies most often... more »

Online Accounts & Special Case Claims Edited

I understand the UI system is setup to meet most case scenarios. However, some cases fall under special circumstances that cause undue hardship and stress through claim denials, delays in fund distributions, a lot of extra work/printing/postage sending denial and information notices via snail-mail, etc.; sometimes repeatedly and ongoing complications due to honest answers to questions flagging the application for review....... more »
