For agricultural laborers in Michigan, migrant advocates (state employees and non-profits) need help enforcing labor violations in a culturally competent manner with targeted investigations by migrant-savvy investigators who understand the techniques needed to procure information from workers:  information is not gathered from workers in a way that leads to enforcement activity. Historically, we have been discouraged... more »

Fight misclassification of employees as independent contractors

- Worker misclassification is rampant in underpaid industries, like janitorial work, homecare, and trucking, where workers of color are overrepresented and have little bargaining power. We propose that:

o DOL put together a multi-agency task force empowered to conduct investigations and employer audits in these industries, coordinate enforcement and penalties across agencies, and recommend policy changes to deter misclassification;... more »

Ensuring ERG Leaders are Fairly Compensated

To ensure DOL's Wage and Hour Division enforcement sufficiently captures wage-related issues for underrepresented groups, I'm proposing a federal mandate for all companies - regardless of size - fairly compensate its diversity & inclusion ERG leaders (employee resource groups). Redefining

Since 2012 the Federal Government has consistently exceeded the 23% spending goal; however, the number of unique businesses receiving those awards has been steadily declining. In 2019, SBA reported that 132.9B (26.5%) went to small businesses, but despite the increase, the number of small businesses receiving contract awards was at a 10 year low and that is because we are working to meet a goal and not to increase participation.... more »

Collect data who gets employed much like the census. Edited

Go to the jobsite and collect basic data on who gets employed and how long they worked there. The true data will show any illegal trends. As a census taker I went to homes and collected raw data that was not reported. This can be done for every business.

As a reseacher we could see the trends in any system. Just like on Glassdoor the more data the more you know about the company the clearer you see that company.
