High School Curriculum - add Practical Adult Education trending idea

Required classes for Juniors and Seniors should include education about credit cards, bank accounts, health plans, budgeting and retirement fundamentals to include terminology, resources, simple quizzes to test their knowledge.  Most underprivileged communities have generations of family in same household but no one has this basic knowledge or has minimal knowledge and should have the information availalble in multiple... more »

Information Portal for Employers trending idea

Create a portal containing information similar to what we already have in JAN (job accommodation network).  Allow the employers to learn their responsibilities and ask questions without fear of an enforcement action.  Many employers do not have the luxury of hiring an in-house counsel or an outside attorney every time they have compliance questions or issues.  Help the employers with compliance.

When creating the portal,... more »

DOL Should Recognize the Value of Independent Work for POC

The Department of Labor must acknowledge the importance of contingent and alternative work arrangements to ‎the cause of worker equity. Underprivileged minority communities are increasingly turning to alternative work ‎arrangements to escape the paradigm of economic dependence imposed by traditional employer-employee work ‎arrangements, which have historically been exploitive towards many communities in the United States.... more »

Regularly engage with worker centers

Worker organizations – such as labor unions and worker centers – provide the necessary vehicle for workers to organize collectively and build their own power. Strong worker organizations are required to combat increasingly precarious working conditions and the ever-growing imbalance of power between employers and workers. This Administration must focus on increasing collaboration with worker centers and other non-union... more »

13th Amendment Eradication / Hire Ex-Cons trending idea

Consider: We all have made mistakes in life whether we have been subject to prosecution of a felony or not.

Consider: We all have the ability to change and make a difference.

With that in mind, I am a reformed man who spent time in both juvenile facilities (homes) and Michigan prisons.

As of July 21, 2021, I have been free from physical bondage 11 years. To me that's a tremendous accomplishment, but I still wear... more »

Employment Empowerment

Regarding "DOL's outreach to workers from underrepresented groups" -- in 2008, the Labor Force Participation Rate for people with disabilities was about the same as it is in 2021. In the 1980's, earlier studies suggested a similar rate (around 33%). This stagnation exists despite decades of important accomplishments towards advancing the employment of people with disabilities through better employment preparation programs,... more »

Equity

let me start by saying that all people are valuable and can add value to any situation. So as an employer how does the govt expect me to balance this idea of equity with ability?  it is best for the consumer for me to hire people based upon their ability to do the job vs focusing on an executive order. Currently, my company employees 12% African American, 6% Asian, 6% Portarican, 6% Lebanese, and I could go on. however,... more »

Combining Education about FMLA with Leave Requests

Some employers offer different types of maternity/paternity leave (paid/not paid).  Many employees share that they need to take leave or PTO due to a caregiving responsibility. It would beneficial to be made aware of the Family Medical Leave Act eligibility at the point of these leave requests.  Additional education and support could help employees with various caregiving responsibilities be more informed of their rights. ... more »

Day Care

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

In order to increase the number of women in the construction field, we need assistance with day care hours of operation.  Many women are single mother's but when they must arrive at work by 5am, there are very few day care options.  Also, single mothers who are trying to improve the lives of their children and themselves, should not have assistance cut when they begin making money.

Division of Spanish speaking professionals & Accessible website

State Vocational Rehabilitation departments should at least have a Division consisting of Spanish speaking professionals that can assist primary language Spanish speakers across the state. All State Vocational Rehabilitation department websites should also have Google Translate on their website to make it easy for individuals to Translate the page into the language of their choosing. I also agree with the idea to make... more »

Federal workforce development programs need to better encourage a wholistic and equitable approach to serving underrepresented populations. While WIOA funded programs include measurements within funding categories, it lacks a gauge across categories. While an area or state may technically do well within a single WIOA title, it may do a poor job across the system and the respective federal entities only report on their... more »

Supportive Employment for Seriously Mentally ill (SMI)

The department of education  Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA)should look at the Individual Support & Placement model (IPS) an evidence-based model to provide employment services to people with disabilities. The State of Ca. DoR is challenged with many barriers to providing services to folks with SMI.

Equity for older persons with disabilities in Federal Agencies

Not everyone advances from high school to higher education. Those who took years to catch up to advance their education and recieve a Bachelors degree need to be considered in the federal workplace.

DV Survivors Accessing UI

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Job loss and domestic violence have been two of the biggest challenges during the pandemic, and UI has served as a vital safety net for jobless workers. But survivors of domestic violence are also workers who lose their jobs or are forced to relocate due to domestic abuse. UI could play a similar lifeline for them.

A framework for ensuring survivors have access to UI is already in place but appears to be underutilized.... more »
